e-Bikes Increase Traffic on Already Crowded Trails
e-Biking has grown exponentially in popularity since the Pandemic and shows no sign of letting up.
2+ million new e-Bikes will be sold in the US in 2024. Double that for 2025.
Most Multi-use Paths in Colorado are 8 feet wide. They were not designed for motorized traffic from e-bikes, scooters and unicycles.
As e-Biking has become more popular on Boulder County trails, so have close encounters or “near miss” incidents with all these electric vehicles and pedestrians.
There were 32 “reported” crashes on Boulder, CO trails in 2022. There were at least 10 X that amount of near misses based on personal experiences. e-Bikes going way too fast and not warning others as they approach from behind will result in even more crashes this year.
Many new eBike owners and rental users are relatively new to modern day cycling and the commonly known rules that most cyclists follow instinctively. Some simply do not know or understand the etiquette associated with sharing a multi-use path with many users.
This portal is dedicated to raising awareness about eBike Safety and Etiquette by providing signage, resources and links to safety related tools/products for all e-Bike users.
Our outdoor signage program provides:
- Access to Trail maps in your locale
- Access to up to date restricted e-bike trail info
- e-Bike Safety & Etiquette kindly reminders
- QR code interface to Report an Incident/Comment
This will allow communities to target where conflicts/incidents are occurring to possibly widen multi-use trails to help avoid crashes.
And build a database of opt-in current, multi-use path users to communicate with…
The goal is to help prevent upcoming crashes by making people more aware of how to share the multi-use/bike paths with many users knowing that the number of e-Bike users on our 8-foot-wide bike paths will double in 2024.
